As you know, we love to find new, quirky and cute artists so we were very excited to chat to Amy from Cakes with Faces. Cakes with Faces is a portfolio and shop full of funny illustrations (usually food related, yummy)! Amy attends a lot of events around England and her next is at Japanorama in Leicester; You can find out more about that here. So, anyway, let’s get on with the interview!

1. Tell us about yourself! Who is the face behind Cake with Faces?
I’m a graphic artist living in Coventry and I love drawing cute characters! I’m a fan of everything cute and crazy from Japan and am planning my next trip to Tokyo right now. I went three years ago and couldn’t wait to go back. I’m teaching myself Japanese so I can hopefully read menus and avoid meat (I’m a veggie)!

2. So, how did Cake with Faces start up? Where did the idea come from?
Cakes with Faces started as an online gallery for my artwork. I’d been drawing cute characters on my computer and it seemed a shame not to do something with them. Then I started dreaming of having a range of t-shirts like my graphic artist idol Tokidoki and in the end I decided to just go for it! I booked a stall at MCM London Comic Con and started ordering my t-shirts. It was a lot of work, especially for my first stall. It’s been great to build it up from nothing and to celebrate the online shop’s first birthday last October!

3. Where do your ideas come from? Are you influenced by films, books, your surroundings?
A lot of my designs are inspired by food (which must be what I think about most of the time…) and everything’s cuter with a face! I called my t-shirt brand Cakes with Faces because my favourite things to draw are cute cupcakes with faces (I made a free iOS app called Cake Mix so you can make your own cake characters with cute accessories)! I’m also inspired by Japanese culture – sushi, robots, anime, Harajuku fashion, monsters…. I put as many of them as I could on my “All the best stuff is from Japan” t-shirt – which is true, right? I love the art style of anime and manga, with the huge eyes and bright colours.

4. Are you working on any projects at the moment?
At the moment I’m working on some new banners for my stall and also some brand new items: hair clips, charms and key rings! I’ve just ordered the charms and can’t wait to get them back from the printers! I’ll have them at my next event: Japanorama at the National Space Centre in Leicester on 4-5 May and then MCM London Comic Con at the end of May at ExCel. I’ve also just finished a recipe for ramen noodles, drawn in comic book style like my How to Make Sushi comic book – look out for it in Neo magazine!

5. How do you hope to progress in the future?
I hope Cakes with Faces can become more established and well-known. I have so many ideas for new stuff I’d like to design – it would be great to design some trainers or even a watch, or fabric for cute dresses! Every penny I make from events and from orders from my online shop goes back into making new designs and new items. One day it would be great to bring my characters to life as figures or blindbox toys!

LoliHime-sama is deviantART‘s resident friendly superstar! Loli has a very cute and animated personality and you’ll probably be able to tell this by reading our interview. If sweetness is your weakness (like us), then you’ll love Loli.

1. What kindled your passion for drawing? When was this?
My sister inspired me to draw, when I was a young kid she drew my favorite character, and it was amazing! It looked amazing and her realistic drawings inspired me so much. Even now thinking about it inspires me! :’)

2. So when you’re stuck for ideas, where do you turn first?
HNN, I turn to cartoon shows XD *shot* Well, I usually watch or look at things that inspire or the idea just might pop up into my mind! @w@;

3. How do you hope to develop as an artist over the next few years?
Well, I hope to continue to practice and learn by example! >u<

4. How do you feel about the kawaii community? Do you feel as though it’s overpopulated?
HNN no! I mean initially there’s tons of them on Pixiv so the more the merrier! SO long as they’re nice I don’t really mind! >3<** ♥

5. What words of advice would you give to any hopeful artists?
Do your best and never give up! >w<**b

We’re a big fan of Loli’s peppiness and we think it is reflected in her artwork. If you’d like to show your appreciation, you can visit Lolihime-Sama here.

We recently got the fabulous opportunity to chat to Chantal, the owner of Pony Chops! Pony Chops is a store full of original and quirky shoes and Russian dolls which have all been hand painted. Chantal’s designs are very creative and fun and we just love how she transfers her illustrations onto shoes. You can find Pony Chops Shop here on Etsy. ♥ Here’s what we spoke about:

1. Buttercrumble are a big fan of your quirky and imaginative shoes. Where did your idea of painting on shoes come from?
I had a design idea for some Teddy Bear shoes one day and decided to try painting some of my boring old brogues with little bears. Everywhere I wore them people would compliment them, so I knew I had to keep painting shoes! I think I’ll keep those shoes forever, they started such an important and exciting part of my life.

2. When you have a spark of inspiration, how do you transfer your ideas from the mind to paper?
Do you create lots of sketches first or do you dive straight in? Most of the time I tend to visualise the shoes in my head and just dive straight in. I think I work best this way. I love seeing the shoes develop and change as I paint them.

3. How many pairs of shoes do you own? Do you wear any of your own creations?
I have exactly 37 pairs of shoes (over half of these I bought planning to paint them!) and I have about 8 of my own creations that I wear regularly.

4. We hear that one day you would love to actually make your own shoes and not just paint them, how are you progressing with this?
Yes this is my plan! I want to be able to shape the shoes instead of just paint them. I’ve just offered a place at London College of Fashion to study shoe design & making and have also been offered an internship at an amazing UK shoe company while I’m studying too! I’m so excited about both, I can’t wait to get making shoes!

5. The creative industry is very competitive at the moment; can you give any suggestions on how to make yourself stand out?
Find your best and most unique assets and use those to your advantage! I know my strong points are pattern and colour so I tend to use this. Being friendly and meeting new people is also massively important. The blogging world has been a great way for me to meet amazing creatives, collaborate and advertise all at the same time. Write to people you admire (whether it be artists, bloggers, designers), I’ve gained so many opportunities and valuable advice by doing this.

So as you can see, we’ve had a great insight into the way that Chantal works! If you’d love to see more, you can find Pony Chops at the following places:

Blog | Etsy | Twitter | Tumblr | Facebook | Instagram

Thanks for reading! Let us know what your favourite item is from Pony Chops Shop! Are you a shoe addict?

Recently we interviewed Avi from Sweet Cavities! Sweet Cavities is an adorable store full of quirky jewellery and accessories which are handmade and full of love. Let’s find out what we chatted about:

1. Sweetness is our weakness, so we love Sweet Cavities! What is it that you love about creating adorable accessories and jewellery?
The joy, fun and rewarding feeling of creating something by yourself and with your own hands and when others love your work. Its a wonderful feeling and I love creating, especially to make someone happy!

2. What was it that sparked your interest in developing your brand?
I was always a D.I.Y and hands on person! Always creating, altering, and making my own attire, hairstyles and accessories, and I figured, why not make a business out of it, so I did!

3. How do you see Sweet Cavities progressing in the future?
Bigger and better I am hoping! Reaching overseas customers and spreading my creations to everyone made with love and care.

4. When you’re in a slump and feel totally uninspired, how do you come up with new ideas?
I don’t take artist blocks well *laughs*, But when I do get them, I try my best to get out it via sketching, surfing art sites like DeviantART, and honestly my imagination! If I can imagine my business succeeding in the future, it sparks a drive to get there!

5. Could you offer any words of wisdom for any of our readers who would love to start making their own jewellery?
Keep on pushing no matter if the odds are against you! Be kind and honest with whatever you do and do not give up no matter what! It will get better!

Sweet Cavities store will be opening soon, you’ll be able to find it here.
