What is Visual Note-taking?

Visual note-taking combines words and illustrations to make meaning of a situation or concept. It can also be referred to as “scribing” or “live illustration”, they’re essentially the same activity!

Images are more memorable than words alone, they help our brains synthesise complicated information. Thus, visual note-taking improves recall and understanding, which is why it’s often used to facilitate events!

When we carry out visual note-taking, we do this physically by putting pen to paper and we also do it digitally, by putting pen to screen! Both techniques are popular, though our digital offering also enables screen sharing, so this method tends to be more suitable for large events.

Who uses it?

Anyone! From universities to corporate organisations.

Visual note-taking is useful for all organisations, and event types. So far, we’ve carried out visual note-taking at community engagement activities, small corporate meetings, exhibitions, conferences, workshops, and so much more! There’s never a dull moment.

What are the benefits?

  1. Imagery is a universal language. Visual note-taking enables communication across different languages by capturing your key messages and takeaways in a way that everyone understands.

  2. Communicate abstract concepts clearly. Using imagery allows you to express the intangible details, and difficult subject matter by boosting comprehension.

  3. No photography permission slips needed. Ensure attendees cannot be identified and save the time intensive process of receiving permission slips.

  4. It's entertaining. Visual note-taking boosts engagement for events, it’s a live activity that enhances the experience.

  5. It's more accessible than words. For instance, it can be challenging to translate thoughts into written words for those diagnosed with dyslexia (AbilityNet, 2019). Illustration aids with the understanding and synthesis of this content.

Above: we’re always getting out and about, and have performed illustration across the UK. We complete visual note-taking virtually too.
