Food Education at Darley Street Market, with a bit of Buttercrumble

When the long-awaited Darley Street Market opened in Bradford in mid-July, one of the first things visitors saw was a bit of Buttercrumble.

FoodSavers Cookery School on the first floor of the new market is an exciting service that educates the community around all things food. From teaching young people and community members about nutrition and healthy eating, food safety and hygiene, the school also helps people learn different cooking methods and improve their cooking skills.

With fun, exciting workshops and classes, the school also partners with Jamie Oliver’s Ministry of Food to deliver an affordable eight-week cooking programme to help boost students’ cooking confidence, with all ingredients, equipment and recipes included.

Buttercrumble partnered with FoodSavers to create a bright, engaging illustrated mural on the front of the cookery school, facing the market escalators. Taking inspiration from British seasonal fruit and veg, our mural celebrates the joy of using local ingredients and sharing food together. We also incorporated important and useful messages about the sustainability of seasonal vegetable intake, as well as introducing a community voucher scheme and encouraging people to eat #JustOneMore serving of veg each day.

As part of the mural, we also created a set of fun, playful characters, illustrations and brand assets that FoodSavers plans on re-using to develop more educational campaigns and materials, ensuring that the mural continues to deliver extra value for the charity.

We’re proud to not only produce a highly-visible and engaging piece of work, we’re even prouder to support such an amazing organisation in its mission to empower and educate the community around the importance of healthy, fun and sustainable eating.

At Buttercrumble, we believe that creative placemaking is a vital, yet often overlooked part of audience engagement. It helps set the tone and mood and helps to create places where people want to be and communities they want to be a part of. If you’d like to find out more about how we can give you a little piece of crumble to bring your place and space to life, please get in touch!
