Top Design Trends Inspired by Hong Kong
We’ve recently been fearless in the pursuit of improving our practice. We were due to represent British design to Hong Kong as part of Business of Design Week (BoDW) with support from the Department for International Trade. Sadly, the main event was cancelled due to recent escalations in civil disturbances across the region. Undeterred by this, we decided to visit the region anyway!
2019: Our Year in Review
At the beginning of 2019, we shared a graphic on social media stating "dreams are the seeds of change". At this time, we were still working at home – just the two of us! Twelve months later and we are now settled in our new studio with a larger team of three. This was something we dreamt of when first starting. We are so grateful we've been able to grow to this point (with plenty of growth left in us).
How did we get to this point, now? Let us share a recap of the last twelve months, starting in January 2019...
Buttercrumble Exhibits Illustration in Hong Kong
Buttercrumble was delighted to visit Hong Kong during BODW CityProg. This was a citywide programme that engaged the creative community and businesses across the region.
As the UK was the 2019 partner nation, we had the chance to showcase our work which was an opportunity we seized with both hands! We took part in the COLLATE exhibition at 7 Mallory Street, curated by Marmalade on Toast (now Thursday Design Studio).
How To: Creative Marketing for Children
We are living in a digital world with 60% of consumers shopping on their smartphones (WGSN, 2019). Society feels busy and anxious. Children are growing up with this experience as the “norm”, so it’s important brands leverage social channels in a positive and empowering way to communicate their messages. We wanted to scout out which retailers are achieving this well for our newest generation.
Buttercrumble Represents Design in Hong Kong!
Our communications studio: Buttercrumble is representing British design on a global platform during Hong Kong’s Business of Design Week (BoDW). Buttercrumble, based in Leeds, was formed by twin sisters (Chloe and Abigail Baldwin). As a studio, we create playful graphic design, branding, and illustration with an ethos of making others smile. Although in the youth of the business, we’ve already gained John Lewis, Chester Zoo and the Royal Armouries as partners on our client roster.
Graphic Design and Illustration — Where is the Line?
Graphic Design. Illustration. Intrinsically-linked or mutually-exclusive? At Buttercrumble, we like to think of graphic design as the umbrella and illustration as typical British raindrops — both together and separate! They are, at times, part of the same.
Both have become creatively intertwined and embedded into commercialism, but what exactly is the difference between the two?

We’re heading to the USA to champion female founders through our book The Brand Power Manifesto. With support from the Creative Export Accelerator, we’re connecting with US businesses, speaking at events, and showcasing Buttercrumble as the go-to branding studio for purpose-driven women-led brands.
